The digital media migration might have started with young early adapters, but all ages are now embracing the digital age – and baby boomers and seniors are more than holding their own. A new report by Nielsen notes that of the estimated 6.4 million iPhone owners in the U.S. as of April, nearly as many are over the age of 55 as are between the ages of 13-24.
The Nielsen report found that 18% of U.S. iPhone owners are 13-24, while 17% are 55 or older; 29% are 25-34, and 36% are 35-54. This trend is underscored in a June 17 report by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, which found that 63% of adult Americans now have broadband Internet access in their homes, compared with 55% in May 2008 –with older Americans accounting for the biggest increases in broadband adoption. Among adults age 50-64, broadband adoption increased from 50% in 2008 to 61% in 2009. Among seniors age 65 and older, broadband adoption jumped 55 percent – from 19% in 2008 to 30% in 2009. |
